The history of Korean dramas will be rewritten in 2009. A grand project beyond anyone's imagination is finally put in action! The Korean Peninsula is the last divided country remaining in the world. The US, Russia, China and Japan--the powers surrounding South and North Korea--are in constant political and military tension in the region over the nuclear issue and the six-way talks.

This drama is the story of special agents dedicated to the life-risking mission of preventing a second Korean war against the backdrop of such regional dynamics. Through grueling training, they have come to not fear death and not feel any guilt over killing. They move upon orders and go to all lengths to complete their mission. They have their own league invisible to the common people. There is no mechanism or organization to protect them as they act against the human instinct to protect life. The government does not acknowledges their existence. They are on their own to protect themselves.

But they also have one thing difficult for them to control. The biggest danger and taboo for these highly trained agents is "love." The spy action genre is an untapped area in Korean dramas. The challenge of this new field is encouraging given that viewers in today's visual era desire something new more than ever. Weapons and equipment used in actual espionage missions have been utilized for the greatest sense of authenticity. Overseas shooting in Japan and Hungary helps to faithfully portray the international spy warfare going on in the world we live in. Synopsis
Assassin Kim Hyun Joon and psychological analyst Choi Seung Hee are lovers as well as colleagues at secret intelligence organization, NSS. Due to a friend’s betrayal, they go through hell with the unlucky fate of continually loving each other but unable to say or do anything about it. Jin Sa Woo is a secret agent who was at the top of his class. However, since meeting Hyun Joon and Seung Hee, he struggles to obey orders. He and Hyun Joon are friends in work but foes in love, as both care for Seung Hee. (KP's note: I’m not sure if Sa Woo is the one that betrays them.)

The character played by T.O.P is an assassin for IRIS, a secret organization hidden the States. He has been assigned to kill Hyun Joon. Kim Sun Hwa is a North Korean security agent who follows her security team leader, Park Chul Yung, like a shadow. She is also ordered to chase after Hyun Joon, but falls in love with him after being discarded by her country. Sato Eriko is an agent for Japan’s Defence Intelligence Headquarters. The cast and crew will film in several different countries (Japan, U.S., China, Russia) with an astounding budget of approximately $15 million USD (based on March 17’s exchange rate). Top 707 agents Kim Hyunjun (Lee Byunghun) and Jin Sawoo (Jung Junho) are blood brothers who swore to trust each other and unchanging friendship for life. Hyunjun had lost his parents in a car accident when he was young. He doesn't have much memory of them from the shock of their death. Not only that, he always carries a sense of void and loneliness in his heart. But his friend Sawoo had filled that void. The men go to 707 Corps to qualify as agents. They stand out and get noticed by the National Security System (NSS) and become the top agents. They meet agent Choi Seungjee (Kim Taehee) there and both fall in love for her. But Hyunjun and Seunghee become close and Sawoo fights to hide his feelings for Seunghee. He tries to be happy for Hyunjun. Hyunjun and Seunghee date in secret from the other NSS agents and eventually go on a secret trip to Japan. When they return to Korea, they are immediately sent on a mission to Hungary with Sawoo. When they successfully finish off their job with immaculate teamwork and are celebrating it.. a message arrives to Hyunjun asking him to meet in secret.

Hardtack Teacher & Star Candy stars Gong Hyo Jin who is an aspiring and wannabe teacher. Against all odds, she obtains a degree from some low ranking university. She hopes feverishly to teach at her old school of which she is kicked out, with a view to getting close to the arts teacher whom she has a big crush on. Gong Yoo plays the role of a rebellious and frivolous 19-year-old high schooler. Actually he is a breezy charmer who is particularly sentimental and blessed with a heart of gold. In order to tame GY and ensure that he causes no more troubles, his step mother hires GHJ as a temporary teacher on a one-year contract so as to keep an eye on GY. The triangular love relationship develops - GY is smitten with GHJ. GHJ is mesmerized by the arts teacher whose love to her is equal.

Putting romance aside, there are subplots of how GHJ helps solve the problems envisaged by the students. Through the ups and downs, the bonds of affection between the students and GHJ as their teacher strengthen.

The performance of Gong Hyo Jin is accurate and right on - convincing enough to be a teacher who has the perseverance to achieve and takes serious about the students. She has a rather mundane appearance, but oozes with some charm which I find irresistible. Gong Yoo makes an indelibly adorable impression with a minimum of effort. He expresses his internal pains and passion in an effective way. His romance and courtship is all mirth and hilarity but at the same time, heart rending enough to move one emotionally - All these conjure up the proper amounts of giggles and tears. The supporting cast members playing the students are admirable.

The chemistry of GY and GHJ is immensely natural and they play off each other perfectly.

What I understand from the past dramas and movies is that a love affair between a teacher and a student is half taboo in Korea. But, here in this drama, it is neither burdensome nor wearisome. To me, it's all the way light hearted. Some parts are even rib-tickling.

Frankly, the story itself is averaged with flaws which are quite apparent. But, my personal view on this drama is that it is full of sweet innocence which I guess can charm and entertain anyone with a heart.

Plot

Baek Nam-Bong (Song Chang Ui) is known as Dr. Frost. He became a professor in psychology at early age. He is extremely bright, but he has difficulties sympathizing with others due to an injury to his frontal lobe as a child. During the day, he now works as a counselor at the campus counseling center and at night he works as a bartender.

Baek Nam-Bong then begins to work with a teaching assistant, Yoon Sung-A (Jung Eun Chae) at the counseling center. Yoon Sung-A is enthusiastic with the clients needing counseling. They work together to solve problems who go their for help.

STORY SYNOPSIS:

49 DAYS is the story of Shin Ji Hyun, a young woman who gets into a car accident a week before her wedding.  The accident led to her being in a coma.  To revive she has to gather the genuine/sincere tears of 3 people who are not members of her family within 49 days.  To fullfill her mission she will be guided by the Scheduler into possessing the body of another woman, Song Yi Kyung.  She will be aided further by her friend from high school Han Kang, who will then get into an entangled relationship with Song Yi Kyung and Shin Ji Hyun.

Review:
Featuring an inventive endless-love story that transgresses time and death in order to explore various individual resistances and social restrictions that affect gay relationships, this is either a successfully emotive queer movie with unusually straight overtones, or a somewhat fleeting and dissatisfying attempt to capture gestures and images of homosexual love, or both these coded types at once.

Maybe I'm a sucker for surface narration in this particular film, because the moments near the end struck a literal chord as I embraced the idea that love can endure and rekindle in astonishing transformative ways. What this movie tries to tell us in an explicit fashion is that when you're in love it shouldn't matter what kinds of obstacles get in the way. It really savours and complicates this point by having In-woo's (JSA's Lee Byung-hun) dead female flame Tae-hee (Lee Eun-ju from Lover's Concerto) live again within the body of his new young male student, Hyun-bin (Yea Hyun-soo) -- thus resolving from the dominant obstacle a secondary theme in the form of a social issue. Where the system of identification may fall apart for gay audiences, though, is the emphasis (visualised and given voice at the climax) that In-woo's love exists for Tae-hee, but not strictly for Hyun-bin who himself becomes part of this narrative game of avoiding or ignoring obstacles. As I suggested above, however, multiple potential readings are on offer here. I'd like to think that anyone with a soft spot for the concept of undying love will find watching Bungee Jumping a fulfilling experience regardless of their sexual orientation.

Like many contemporary South Korean films, it would be very easy to leap to the conclusion that Bungee Jumping is an allegory for reunification. Of course it is true that boundaries are successfully navigated and crossed in this film, but rather than suggest it engages with a concrete socio-political issue, why not admire instead the remarkably original and fascinating way it incorporates the notion of division with another very different issue currently receiving less cultural attention in Korea? Anyone seeking an extremely moronic version of the reunification metaphor in a Korean film should check out The Coast Guard. Kim Ki-duk's film unveils an astonishingly preposterous final shot almost, it seems, for the sake of making meaning out of nothing in particular. In contrast, Bungee Jumping provides us with an excellent example of how perceptive Korean filmmakers can choose not to say precisely the things that everyone expects them to say.

Recommending films via a system of comparison is always tricky, but my personal range of thoughts and feelings about Bungee Jumping are similar to those I have for Blue Gate Crossing. While the Taiwanese film offers a more insightful depiction of how people handle intimate relationships and struggle with questions of sexual identity, both films reach poignant and nostalgic conclusions in a very natural manner. Although it operates with an outlandish mystical concept, it's easy to relate to the emotional subject material Bungee Jumping evokes and that to me signals a fine work.
